David Trent, of Mastic Beach, was sentenced to 28 years in prison in Suffolk County Court on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
It followed his guilty plea to manslaughter and related charges in the death of Jorge Mauricio Sevilla Berrera.
Prosecutors said Trent – a member of the criminal street organization, “No Fake Love,” or “NFL” – was with several other gang members outside the now-closed Minx nightclub in Farmingville on Dec. 5, 2021, when they got into a confrontation with Barrera and his friends.
The argument turned physical and Trent retrieved a gun from his car before shooting Barrera. Trent and his associates then kicked the man while he was on the ground before Trent stood over Barrera and shot him to death.
Trent and his associates then got into their car, where he leaned out a window and fired several shots as the vehicle drove away. Two other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
As part of his guilty plea, Trent also admitted to his role in the assault and carjacking of a Lyft driver in April 2022.
According to investigators, he and two accomplices – Shati Roy, Jr. and Corey Foggy – lured the Lyft driver to an address in Wading River on April 13, 2022.
Once in the backseat, Roy repeatedly struck the driver in the head and body while Trent pointed a gun at the man’s head. Foggy eventually pulled the victim out of the vehicle before Roy got into the driver’s seat and drove away.
Roy then ripped out the dashboard camera and threw it onto the road. Suffolk County Police later recovered the camera, which captured the entire incident.
Both Roy and Foggy previously pleaded guilty for their roles in the robbery and carjacking.
On Monday, Sept. 30, Trent pleaded guilty to the following counts:
- Manslaughter
- Two counts of attempted murder
- Conspiracy to commit murder
- Two counts of criminal possession of a weapon
- Robbery
- Grand larceny
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said he was satisfied with the sentence, adding that “this was a violent and brutal act and now this defendant will be held accountable for his indefensible actions.”
